Pythara waterfalls

In village Apoikia, ten min walking distance from the main road, there are the Pythara waterfalls. The spot is known for centuries as “the fairygrounds” due to the wild and thick vegetation. Refreshing waterfalls create thriving ecosystems of small lakes, wild flowers, birds, insects and small animals that inhabit the area. The source of the water is in mountain Petalo whereas the running waters end to the Yialia beach. Most of the water is used to irrigate farms, although between 1863 and 1936 the waterfalls were used to operate the largest watermill in Balkans that gave power to a pasta factory known as “Fabrika”.
